News & Insights
With the summer evenings stretching ahead, it’s a great time to make the most of Reading after work. For those of us working at The Blade, there are a variety of activities to help make the most of the warm, light summer evenings.

There are plenty of options for things to do including a range of outdoor activities, dinner, entertainment, shopping and sports. Here are some of the ways in which those of us working at The Blade spend some of our free time in the summer evenings:

Outdoor Activities

·        River Walks: given Reading’s close proximity to the River Thames a lovely way to end the day is with a stroll along the Thames Path to take in the picturesque views and peaceful scenery.

·        Forbury Gardens: just next door to The Blade are these beautiful Victorian gardens which offer green space – an ideal place for an evening picnic and often live music and events are happening too.

·        Rowing: on summer evenings it’s possible to rent a motor boat or rowing boat and enjoy a calm twilight messing about on the river.

Dining and Drinks

·        Riverside Restaurants: there are plenty of restaurants and pubs along the river, including the Thames Lido, which can offer evening meals alongside a scenic dining experience.

·        Fine Dining: for a meal with a difference the London Street Brasserie creates superb meals from local produce, and has been voted Restaurant of the Year. It’s also picked up Michelin recognition.

Entertainment and Culture

·        Reading Abbey Ruins: a top spot for outdoor theatre and music events in the summer are the town’s historic ruins, which offer a spectacular backdrop to evening entertainment.

·        Live Music: Reading has a lively music scene and local venues including Sub89 host regular live music, comedy and club nights.

·        Reading Museum: although the museum is open in the day there are sometimes evening events and exhibitions, especially in the summer months.

Sports and Fitness

·        Parthian Climbing: try indoor climbing with pay as you go or memberships offering taster sessions, beginner courses and weekly social clubs.

·        Evening Yoga: over the past few years it’s been possible to join in with a pop-up yoga session at one of the local parks.

·        Cycling: if you’ve commuted by bike and made use of The Blade’s bike racks during the day, a great way to end spend the evening is with a leisurely bike ride along the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Shopping and Relaxation

·        Late Night Shopping: there are options to browse shops after work at either The Oracle Shopping Centre or Broad Street.

·        Spa Evening: treat yourself to a spa evening at a relaxing venue such as Nirvana Spa.

·        Sunset Views: head to Reading’s largest green space at Prospect Park or venture further west to Tilehurst for stunning views of the sunset.

And given how well connected Reading is – with buses and trains it’s easy to jump on public transport to get home.
