Embracing the hybrid setup in Reading

Most UK companies have adopted hybrid working since the Covid pandemic. But how are companies in Reading embracing the hybrid setup? Or is the workforce in Reading taking a different path?

Offering a hybrid mix of remote working and time in the office is now a key factor for many employees. Post pandemic it’s typical for full time workers to be in the office a few days a week, working at home or elsewhere for the remainder. Some companies have also opted to move away from larger cities to more regional hubs. A recent survey by the Centre for Cities reported that the most popular working pattern in London was for team members to be in the office three days a week.

Are people in Reading embracing hybrid working?

To identify whether Reading followed this trend REDA (Reading's Economy & Destination Agency) asked those working here how they managed their working week. The results showed a few trends starting to emerge:

·        32% are working in the office 5 days a week

·        17% opt for 4 days a week

·        28% are on par with London, at 3 days a week

·        Reading workers follow a fairly even split of days worked in the office, except for Friday

·        52% of employers have policies about hybrid working, although the majority are flexible about which days have to be worked in the office.

·        48% of respondents confirmed that the office was where most of their work was done (compared to home working which scored 30%)

·        56% said they expected the office to be their main work location over the next 6 months compared to 32% opting for a hybrid model

·        Most respondents said that an office day also allowed them to spend time in town; running errands, shopping or visiting cafes, bar and restaurants

Compared to London and other regional centres, Reading is seeing a stronger return of people to the office, helping boost activity in the town centre and support the local economy. Even larger corporates are following suit with telecoms giant, Three, now centring its HQ on the outskirts of the town at Green Park.

Why is hybrid working important?

Hybrid working continues to offer a good sense of balance for team members. Offering greater flexibility, hybrid options allow a better work-life balance, improving mental health and wellbeing and promoting productivity. It also means that office spaces can be reimagined, allowing for more collaborative areas, meeting spaces and teamwork hubs where people can connect.
